On the 30th May, 2024, SCVYS attended the launch of the “My Tomorrow” campaign at Millennium Point, Birmingham, a groundbreaking initiative by the Positive Youth Foundation and the West Midlands Violence Reduction Unit. The event, attended by young people, community leaders, and decision-makers, aimed to tackle stigmas associated with young people and postcodes.

The campaign aims to:

  1. Reduce Youth Violence: By engaging young people in positive activities and providing them with support, the campaign seeks to prevent them from becoming involved in violence.
  2. Empower Young People: It provides opportunities for personal development, skill-building, and goal-setting to help young people achieve their full potential.
  3. Community Engagement: The campaign involves community stakeholders in creating a supportive environment for young people.
  4. Provide Resources and Support: It offers access to resources, mentorship, and support networks to help young people navigate challenges and make positive choices.

Professional boxers Kal, Gamal, and Galal Yafai, ambassadors for the campaign, spoke passionately about the need for support and opportunities for youth from deprived areas. Kal Yafai expressed his concerns about young people’s futures, highlighting the importance of the campaign.

Simon Foster, West Midlands Police and Crime Commissioner, opened the event by addressing the region-wide consultation findings, which revealed that many young people feel disadvantaged due to their backgrounds. The campaign seeks to empower youth, influence policies, and ensure their voices are heard.

A short film titled “At What Cost?” premiered, depicting the challenges faced by young people in the West Midlands. The event also showcased a collage art series, set to tour the region, emphasising the campaign’s message that youth are part of the solution, not the problem.

Assistant Chief Constable Claire Bell praised the initiative, highlighting the importance of collaborative efforts to help young people realize their dreams. The year-long program promises to provide resources, support, and opportunities for youth across the West Midlands, making a real difference in their lives.
